A Google Analytics handover is best done by moving the GA4 property into an account your client controls. That keeps the measurement history with the property instead of leaving reports trapped in an agency account.
The move should not require retagging, but permissions deserve attention. Decide whether the property keeps its existing users or inherits the destination account permissions before you click Move.
Before you start
- Confirm the destination Analytics account and who has Administrator and Editor roles on both sides.
- List linked products, data streams, audiences, reports, and permissions before moving the property.
- Tell your client what access you will keep, replace, or remove after the move.
On Google Analytics, specifically
- Google Analytics lets you move a GA4 property and its data streams from one Analytics account to another. Source, checked September 3, 2026.
- Moving a Google Analytics property requires Administrator and Editor roles for both the source and destination accounts. Source, checked September 3, 2026.
- The Google Analytics Tracking ID does not change when a property moves, so the site does not need to be retagged. Source, checked September 3, 2026.
- When moving a Google Analytics property, you can keep existing property permissions or replace them with permissions from the destination account. Source, checked September 3, 2026.
- Google Analytics moves all reporting data with the property, while older change history stays with the source account. Source, checked September 3, 2026.
The three stages
Prepare
Check that the property can move, clear blocked states such as unsupported organization links, and decide how permissions should behave on the destination account.
Transfer
Use the Analytics Admin move flow, choose the destination account, choose whether permissions are kept or replaced, and confirm the processing notice.
Confirm
Open the property under the client's account, check data streams and recent reports, and verify the tag ID before removing your unnecessary access.
What to tell your client
- Which Analytics account will contain the property.
- Which permissions move with it.
- That the site tag should keep reporting under the same tag ID.
After it is done
Record the asset in Everkey, change its ownership status from needs_transfer to client_owned, and leave a short note with the account that now controls the analytics property. The free tier is enough for a small handover map.
